The Innovation Crescent is a 13 county region spanning Atlanta to Athens that is implementing an life science workforce development strategy under funding from Georgia's Work Ready Region program. This region is an industry-led effort headed by an industry leader and guided by the region's existing industry network. The result is a linking of education, workforce development and training aligned to the needs of the regional bioscience industry.

In 2008, the Innovation Crescent received a $500,000 grant for a ten county region to collaboratively develop its regional talent pool aligned to the life science industry which expanded to three more counties in 2009 with an additional $400,000 grant.

Key activities under these grants include increasing the number of two and four-year students in majors aligned with the life sciences industry and developing documented career pathways leading to lifelong learning for emerging, entry level and existing workers.

The Innovation Crescent Regional Partnership, to date, includes Barrow, Clarke, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Fulton, Gwinnett, Jackson, Madison, Morgan, Oconee, Oglethorpe and Walton Counties. All the counties in the region are currently working toward Certified Work Ready Community status.

The region is emerging as a hub of life science in the Southeast with top research institutions such as Emory University, Georgia Tech, University of Georgia and Georgia State University; government entities and nonprofit organizations including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Arthritis Foundation, U.S. Department of Agriculture and American Cancer Society; a wide range of bioscience companies. Its current workforce is highly educated and has the skills to support bioscience innovation.
