Presenter: Marc Pedersen, M.S., Ed.S., is a science instructor at Paulding County High School where he has taught biotechnology, chemistry, environmental science, and physics. He is the current Georgia Bio Biotechnology Teacher of the Year and Georgia Science Teachers Association Teacher of the Year. Mr. Pedersen was instrumental in developing and leading the biotechnology program at his school’s magnet program, ultimately leading to STEM certification in 2017. As a published research scientist and former molecular ecologist, Mr. Pedersen brings his expertise and passion for biotechnology into the classroom. In addition to teaching the biotechnology pathway curriculum, his students are conducting exciting and innovative research. Currently, Mr. Pedersen’s students are using newly emerging molecular techniques such as environmental DNA, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, and DNA barcoding of Georgia aquatic species. His students are encouraged to publish their research and to enter various competitions throughout the year. Read more about Marc’s Biotech Teacher of the Year award, learn how he integrated authentic student-driven inquiry throughout the biotech pathway in this inspiring success story from 2015 (see page 10), and visit his website Pedersen Science for some great teaching resources.
